What do you really need in a home?
If your shopping around for a new house or condo, even just casually, you probably have a mental list of what you want and what you need. And those are two very important different things.
You see, you may be able to do without something you want in a new home. But can you do without something you really, really need? Probably not.
Here's an example:
Say you want a condo with a spacious enclosed balcony or sunroom, but you really need two decent-sized bedrooms. If you hold out for both, you may miss some great opportunities on the market. Or, worse, you might become so enamored by a beautiful sunroom that you decide to overlook the fact that the unit only has one bedroom.(And if you really needed two, your going to miss not having that extra bedroom!)
That's why it's important to know what you really need in a new home versus what you want.
Create a wish list and carefully thing about each item. Write "need" next to those items that are an absolute requirement and "want" next to those that, if necessary, you could do without, at least for the time being. (Keep in mind some "wants" can be added later.)
By separating the needs and the wants on your wish list, you're ensuring that you get everything you need in a new house or condo. And it just might be possible to get all the things you want, too, depending on your timeframe and budget.
